Yumbo Centrum, the LGBT+ heart of Maspalomas
The Yumbo Centrum, which opened in October 1982 in Playa del Inglés, is the world's only LGBTI leisure shopping centre: more than 50 venues spread across several floors around an open-air courtyard. By day it works like any ordinary, family-friendly shopping centre — shops, cafés, restaurants and services; as evening falls it becomes the epicentre of Gran Canaria's LGBT+ scene, with bars, cabaret, drag shows and clubs. It is the beating heart of Maspalomas, a world-leading LGBT+ destination, and the stage for the year's biggest events, from Maspalomas Pride to Winter Pride.

What it is
A shopping centre that made history
The Yumbo Centrum opened its doors in October 1982 as just one more shopping centre in the fledgling holiday resort of Playa del Inglés, in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. Its open architecture — tiered levels of terraces and balconies looking out over a vast central courtyard — proved, in time, to be perfectly suited to the open-air leisure that defines the south of Gran Canaria today.
What began as a conventional shopping arcade gradually became, decade after decade, something with no equivalent anywhere on earth: the world's only LGBTI leisure shopping centre. With more than 50 venues spanning shops, restaurants, bars and clubs, the Yumbo distils into a single building the identity of a destination that welcomes half a million LGBT+ travellers every year and enjoys the official backing of Gran Canaria's Tourism Board through the Proudly Gran Canaria brand.
It is a symbol, too. For much of the European community the Yumbo is not simply a place to shop or dine: it is a haven of freedom that people return to season after season, a meeting point that has accompanied six decades of tourism history in Maspalomas.
From day to night
Two lives in a single building
The Yumbo has, quite literally, two lives each day. In the sunlight it is a family-friendly shopping centre like any other: hairdressers, opticians, fashion and electronics shops, a pharmacy, cafés for breakfast and restaurants where you can dine looking out over the courtyard. Many visitors wander through in the morning without suspecting the transformation that arrives at dusk.
When evening falls and the lights come on, the centre sheds its skin. The upper floors are where the nightlife gathers: cocktail bars, cabaret venues and drag shows, music terraces and clubs that keep the courtyard alive until the small hours. The mix of registers — retail by day, leisure by night — sits together with complete ease and is part of the place's charm.
That after-dark character has its roots in the 1980s, when the Yumbo began to host the first scene venues that would establish Maspalomas as a world-leading LGBT+ destination — a process already taking shape in the 1960s and 70s, helped along by a gentle climate of 18 to 25 °C all year round.
Diversity
The Darío Jaén Diversity Square
At the heart of the centre lies the Darío Jaén Diversity Square, a space that lends both its name and its sense of identity to everything the Yumbo represents. This corner serves as a landmark within the maze of floors and venues, and as a symbolic stage for the tolerance and mutual respect that define the destination.
It is also one of the focal points of the action during the major events: stages, performances and celebrations find a natural home here. Beyond its practical role as a meeting place, its name captures the message of the centre itself: a space open to everyone, where diversity is not a label added on but the very essence of the house.
The big dates
The stage for the year's biggest events
The Yumbo is the epicentre of Maspalomas's LGBT+ calendar, a programme that spreads major dates across the whole year and helps to explain why the LGBT+ segment accounts for close to 15% of the island's tourism business. The season starts strongly with the Bear Carnival (19–29 March 2026), which draws more than 3,000 people to the centre itself.
The headline event is Maspalomas Pride (4–10 May 2026), marking its 25th anniversary with more than 350,000 attendees, a grand parade on Saturday 9 May and broadcast on RTVE's La 2; the 2027 edition looks set for the week of 8 May. Autumn and winter keep up the momentum with Maspalomas Fetish Pride (1–5 October), the Freedom Festival (around October), Winter Pride (2–8 November, more than 40,000 people basking in winter sun of around 23 °C) and the Freedom New Year Festival (28 December to 1 January).
The bond with Carnival is especially close: the Yumbo and the south of the island host the Maspalomas Drag Gala (26–27 March 2026), heir to that first Drag Gala created by the Maspalomas Carnival in 1986. You can follow the thread on our pages for the Maspalomas Carnival, the Las Palmas Drag Gala and the Canary Islands Carnival. The galas can be followed on Televisión Canaria, TVE's La 2 and the International Channel.
Getting there
Where it is and how to get there
The Yumbo Centrum sits in Playa del Inglés, within the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, in the south of Gran Canaria, just a few minutes from the beach and from the great belt of dunes that links Playa del Inglés with Maspalomas. Its central location makes it the go-to landmark for finding your way around the entire resort area.
From Gran Canaria Airport it is a little over half an hour by car along the GC-1 motorway heading south. The area is well served by the bus (guagua) routes that connect Playa del Inglés with Maspalomas, Puerto Rico and the capital, and the surrounding cluster of hotels, apartments and shops is easily explored on foot. To plan your trip you'll find our guides to hotels in the Canary Islands and beaches in Gran Canaria handy, including the famous beach among the dunes, with Kiosco 7 as the reference point of the LGBT+ area.
One reassuring note: Spain tops ILGA-Europe's ranking of LGBTI rights and has recognised marriage equality since 2005, which makes Maspalomas a destination that is as festive as it is safe.
