Garajonay National Park (La Gomera): laurel forest, mist and trails

Garajonay occupies the high central area of La Gomera, where moisture carried by the trade winds feeds a forest very different from the dry image many people expect of the Canary Islands. Its value lies in the laurel forest: ancient, dense and damp vegetation that preserves the atmosphere of the subtropical forests that covered parts of the Mediterranean millions of years ago. A visit is not simply about pretty nature; this is a rare, fragile landscape that is central to the identity of the island.

Inside the park, the laurel forest creates an unmistakable atmosphere: moss-covered branches, damp paths, ferns, mist and filtered light that can change within minutes. The forest does not need grand viewpoints to impress; often the best experience is to walk slowly and listen. The mist does not spoil the visit, it completes it. It can also cool the air and make the ground wet, so come prepared even if the coast is sunny.

Common reference points include La Laguna Grande, El Cedro and Alto de Garajonay, which at 1,487 metres is the highest point on La Gomera. There are easy paths and more demanding routes, so it is not a place to choose blindly. The key is to match the walk to the actual weather, ground conditions and the group’s ability. If you only want a first taste, a short walk through laurel forest can be more memorable than trying to connect too many stops.

Garajonay demands respect for the weather. Humidity, mist, mud and relative cold can appear even if you have set out from a sunny part of the island. Wear shoes with grip, carry a warm layer, water and enough phone battery if you plan to walk. Do not leave marked trails or improvise long routes without reliable information. The park’s beauty lies in its changing character, but that same quality means the visit should be taken seriously.

The park fits naturally into a route through Agulo and Hermigua. You can start in a northern village, climb towards the laurel forest and end the day at a viewpoint if visibility allows. It can also work the other way round: forest in the morning and coast in the afternoon. The important thing is not to overfill the day with stops, because Garajonay is best enjoyed when given space.
