San Sebastián de La Gomera gathers several layers of the island into a manageable area: administrative capital, harbour, historic centre, urban beach and link with Tenerife. It does not have Garajonay’s lush drama or the rural image of the northern villages, but it offers context, services and a very recognisable history. For many travellers it is the first impression of La Gomera; for others, the place to close the trip with a quiet walk by the sea. Either way, it deserves more than simply disembarking and moving on.

San Sebastián’s historical fame is tied to Christopher Columbus, who stopped here in 1492 before continuing across the Atlantic. That memory appears in places such as the Torre del Conde, the Casa de Colón and the Pozo de la Aguada, traditionally associated with the water used to baptise America. It is worth approaching these sites with a measured eye: rather than isolated grand monuments, they form a small urban route explaining the island’s strategic role in Atlantic navigation.

The route links southern Tenerife with the Gomera harbour and suits both short escapes and fuller island itineraries. If you plan to explore La Gomera by car, the harbour is a very practical starting point.

San Sebastián works well as a first orientation stop, as a base if you want services close by, or as a final pause before the ferry. From here you can climb towards Garajonay National Park, continue to Hermigua and Agulo, or follow the island around towards other valleys. On a short trip, combine the Columbus sites, the beach and a drive inland. With more days, use it as a logistical base and save the most intense landscapes for the mountain routes.
