El Sabinar (El Hierro): the juniper grove bent by the wind

El Sabinar is a formation of Canary junipers, Juniperus turbinata, shaped over years by the prevailing wind. The most famous tree leans dramatically, as if it had yielded to the trade wind without ever breaking. That tension between resistance and fragility gives the place much of its force: this is not a dense forest for hours of walking, but a very specific scene where the climate has written itself into the trees.

El Sabinar lies in the La Dehesa and El Julan area, in western El Hierro, an open, dry, windy territory with a strong character of its own. The landscape shifts away from the green north and the coast: here, breadth, rock, pasture and an ancient-island feeling dominate. Nearby is the Ermita de los Reyes, linked to the patron saint of El Hierro, adding a cultural layer to a stop that often begins with a photograph and ends up being more landscape-driven than expected.

The El Hierro juniper impresses not through size, but through character. Its leaning form sums up the island’s relationship with the wind: adapting without disappearing. That is why the image of El Sabinar has become one of El Hierro’s strongest postcards. Treat the site with care: do not climb on the trees, do not force photographs by entering sensitive areas and remember that its value lies precisely in having endured for so long.

El Sabinar fits well into a western El Hierro route, together with Pozo de la Salud and Faro de Orchilla. It can also be part of a wider day through La Dehesa, the Ermita de los Reyes and the volcanic landscapes of the island’s far west. The best approach is not to rush: the distances are not huge, but the roads invite calm driving.

Access is free, but the setting can be windy and exposed. Bring comfortable shoes, water, sun protection and a light layer even if the day seems settled. If you want to photograph the best-known juniper, avoid touching it or putting weight on its branches. The visit becomes much richer when understood as a living landscape rather than a backdrop: you are seeing an extreme natural adaptation to the conditions of western El Hierro.
