Faro de Orchilla (El Hierro): the old Prime Meridian and the end of the world

Faro de Orchilla is one of El Hierro’s most powerful stops for its location, history and frontier feeling. It is not designed as a comfortable viewpoint to tick off in passing, but as a place you reach in order to feel the island’s far south-west: lava, wind, Atlantic and an isolated lighthouse in an almost mineral landscape. The visit has the quality of a route’s end point, where the map runs out of road and the horizon takes over.

Punta de Orchilla was linked for centuries to the world’s first meridian, a reference used from classical geographical tradition and kept on European maps until Greenwich was officially adopted in 1884. That is why El Hierro is associated with the idea of the Prime Meridian and the western edge of the known world. Today, that history gives the visit depth: you are not simply looking at a lighthouse, but at a place that long helped organise how the world was measured.

The setting is volcanic, stark and exposed. Badlands dominate the scene, with dark tones, rough stone and the ocean striking the island’s edge. The strength of Faro de Orchilla lies precisely in that austerity: no artifice, no excess, only a historic structure facing a landscape that feels remote. It is a very different stop from the green valleys of the north or the natural pools along the coast.

You reach it via the south-western end of El Hierro, with stretches of road and dirt track that are best tackled without hurry and with a vehicle suited to the day’s conditions. Before setting out, check the route status, wind forecast and available daylight for the return. The lighthouse combines very well with El Sabinar and Pozo de la Salud if you want to dedicate the day to the west of the island.

Access to the surroundings is free, but this should not be improvised as a quick stop at the end of the day. Bring water, comfortable shoes, sun protection and enough time to return in daylight if you do not know the area. The track can be slower than it looks on the map, and the isolation is part of the experience.
