Mirador de la Peña, El Hierro: views over the Valle de El Golfo

Mirador de la Peña brings together two readings in one stop: the elemental landscape of El Hierro and the way César Manrique worked with place. The building looks out over the Valle de El Golfo without imposing itself on the cliff, using stone, planting and lines that frame the view. From the viewpoint, you grasp the scale of the valley, the drop towards the coast and the island’s constant relationship with the Atlantic. It is a slow place, made more for looking than for rushing through.

The viewpoint is in the municipality of Valverde, in the high area overlooking the Valle de El Golfo. It is reached by road from the northern settlements and the interior of El Hierro, through scenery that shifts between green slopes, open stretches and upland sections. The visit fits well into a route around the northern part of the island or as a panoramic stop before descending towards the valley. Access to the viewpoint is free; the restaurant is managed as an independent service.

Choose a moment with good visibility if you want to see the full Valle de El Golfo, as clouds can cling to the high ground and close off the panorama. Bring a light layer if the wind is blowing, even on mild days.
