Salinas de Fuencaliente: visiting the south of La Palma

The Salinas de Fuencaliente are an active working landscape, not an empty postcard. Salt is made with sun, wind and manual labour, in salt pans where the white crystals stand out sharply against the recent lava of southern La Palma. Visually, the place is striking: geometric ponds, mounds of salt, the nearby lighthouse and the sea hitting an exposed coast. It is also a good place to see how an extreme landscape has been used without being disfigured. The production of Sal Marina Teneguía is associated with natural evaporation methods and repeated harvests through the season, which gives the walk around the salt pans its meaning. You do not need a long guided visit to appreciate it: walk attentively, respect the working areas and finish with a coffee, the shop or a meal if it fits your route. On an island shaped by recent volcanoes, this corner shows a patient edge economy, closely bound to the weather.

The salt pans sit at the far south of La Palma, in Fuencaliente, beside the road that descends towards the lighthouses. By car, drive down from Los Canarios on the LP-207 towards the coast; it is a short distance, but the bends and volcanic scenery are best taken without rushing. There is parking nearby, although it can fill at busy times. The visit combines very well with the Volcán de San Antonio, Teneguía and the Faro de Fuencaliente. If you are doing the Ruta de los Volcanes, the salt pans can make a perfect ending, provided your transport is already sorted. The road drops to an open area with little shade, so check fuel, water and timing before descending.

Go in low light if photography matters to you: the relief of the salt pans, the reflections in the water and the contrast between salt and lava are especially good in the morning or at sunset. Take sun protection and a light layer if the wind is blowing; the setting is very exposed. The café and shop open daily from 11:00 to 19:00, and the restaurant from 13:00 to 18:00. Respect the marked areas, do not step into the salt pans and do not treat the salinas like a beach: this is a place of work, production and visiting. If you are travelling with children, explain that the salt beds are not to be walked on, as they are part of the production process and are easily damaged.
