Charco Azul: natural sea pools in La Palma

Charco Azul is a set of natural pools adapted for swimming on the north coast of La Palma. Its appeal lies in the balance between volcanic rock, seawater and services: it is not an isolated rock pool with no support, but a family-friendly space with sun deck, steps, handrails, showers, changing rooms, toilets, parking and a children's area with a gentler bottom. Its refurbishment strengthened its reputation and made it one of the most comfortable places to enjoy the sea in San Andrés y Sauces. The setting matters too: the blue water contrasts with the black coast and the green of the nearby laurel forest. Even so, the open sea is still all around. The fact that the pool is protected does not mean every day is the same, nor that swell can be ignored. It is an especially practical alternative when an open beach does not appeal, provided the sea allows safe bathing.

Charco Azul is in the municipality of San Andrés y Sauces, on the north-eastern coast of La Palma. By car, the usual route is along the LP-1 to the Los Sauces area, then down towards the coast following local signs. There is parking nearby, although on sunny days and weekends it can fill early. If you are coming from Santa Cruz de La Palma, treat the journey as part of a northern route and combine it with Los Tilos, San Andrés or Puerto Espíndola. By public transport, check guagua times and the final stretch, because it is not always as direct as it looks on the map. The final descent is local and can be slow when people are heading back.

Check the state of the sea before going and always look at the conditions when you arrive. With strong swell, wind or temporary closures, change the plan: natural pools are not enclosed swimming pools. Lifeguard service may operate only in season or at specific periods, so do not assume it will always be there. Bring water shoes if you dislike contact with wet rock, plus a light towel and sun protection; there are sun deck areas, but shade should not be taken for granted. Avoid using soap in the showers, leave no rubbish and respect the children's areas. For a comfortable visit, go early and combine the swim with lunch in the north. Wet rocks are more slippery than they look, so walk slowly even out of the water.
