Cuevas de Ajuy (Fuerteventura): black sand, cliffs and a coastal path

Las Cuevas de Ajuy sit beside one of Fuerteventura’s most expressive stretches of coast: a black-sand beach tucked between cliffs and a path running over ancient rock facing the open Atlantic. The surrounding walls reveal very old geological materials in the context of the Canary Islands, adding another layer to the landscape beyond the photograph. This is not a soft postcard stop: the place has force, mineral contrast and a direct relationship with the sea, with caves carved by erosion and an unsheltered horizon.

Access is from Ajuy, a village in the municipality of Pájara on Fuerteventura’s west coast. Drive to the village and the route to the caves begins beside the beach. The path is short and easy to identify, but it passes through a cliff environment, with steps, uneven rock and areas exposed to the wind. You do not need to book a tour to reach the main area, although you should always follow the marked route and avoid improvising descents towards breaking waves.

Wear comfortable shoes, even if the stop looks brief: the terrain combines sand, stone and steps, and it can be slippery when there is sea moisture. Before going near the caves or the shoreline, check the sea conditions; with strong surf, swell or difficult tide, the sensible choice is to stay away from the break zone and not swim. Sun and wind also matter, so bring water and protection. The visit is best enjoyed without rushing, leaving enough time to read the cliffs and return in daylight.
