What it is and why go

Playa de Tebeto is a little-known wild beach in northern Fuerteventura, in the municipality of La Oliva, at the foot of the sacred mountain of Tindaya. It forms at the mouth of the Barranco de Tebeto, tucked between escarpments and slopes with rough native vegetation, giving it a remote, rugged character. It appeals to travellers looking for solitude, unspoilt scenery and a sense of escape, far from the large tourist beaches of Corralejo or El Cotillo. It is also used as a naturist beach. Do not expect beach bars or infrastructure: its appeal lies precisely in the untouched landscape and the silence.

What the beach is like

This is a small, isolated beach, around 200 metres long and 30 metres wide, with golden sand mixed with rocks and stones of different sizes. The setting is open and rustic, framed by cliffs, slopes and wild vegetation. There are no services at all: no showers, toilets, lifeguards, bars or equipment hire. The atmosphere is very quiet and solitary, with very few people even in high season, and naturism is common. Arrive fully self-sufficient, as the nearest place with services is Tindaya.

How to get there

The beach lies in the municipality of La Oliva, near Tindaya, on the north-west coast. From Tindaya, take the turn-off down towards the coast, following a track for several kilometres to the Barranco de Tebeto; the reference road in the area is the FV-10. The final stretch is on a dirt track, so drive slowly and carefully, ideally in a vehicle with reasonable ground clearance. There is no formal car park: leave the car on an open area near the mouth of the ravine and walk the last few metres down to the sand. Fill the tank and bring water, as there is nothing in the immediate area.

Swimming, wind and when to go

Tebeto faces west and often receives swell and wind, both common along Fuerteventura’s northern coastline, so the sea can become rough quickly. Swimming is advisable only on calm-sea days and always with caution: there is no surveillance or lifeguard cover, currents are possible, and anyone entering the water does so at their own risk. Do not swim alone or when there is swell. The best time to visit is on low-wind, flat-sea days, especially around the middle of the day; when the wind is strong, it works better as a viewpoint and walking spot than as a bathing beach.

Tips for visiting

Go completely self-sufficient: water, food, a parasol, sun protection and comfortable footwear are essential, as there are no services and no natural shade. Respect the virgin landscape and take all rubbish away with you; this is a fragile, lightly altered place. Plan the visit in daylight, as the track and return journey are more difficult after dark. Tebeto combines very well with Tindaya mountain and its surroundings, or with a day exploring the north of the island: the beaches and old centre of El Cotillo, the dunes of Corralejo and the Tostón lighthouse are all within comfortable driving distance.
