Morro Jable, Fuerteventura: a practical guide to the south

Morro Jable brings together two sides of Fuerteventura that do not always overlap: a town with a port and local life, and a large tourist area beside an immense beach. Playa del Matorral, with the lighthouse as its landmark, gives visitors a very Fuerteventura sense of scale: pale sand, huge horizons and room even on busier days. The old centre of Morro Jable still has restaurants, sloping streets and a more everyday feel; towards Jandía you find hotels, the promenade, shops and tourist services. It suits travellers who want the south of Fuerteventura without feeling completely isolated, those who prioritise a long beach, and anyone planning to visit Cofete, Sotavento or the far end of Jandía. It is not the most convenient base for exploring the north of the island, because the distances matter. It is, however, one of the best places for several days in the south, alternating easy swims, excursions and dinners without always needing to drive. The key is to accept its location: it is far away, but that is exactly what opens up the broader, wilder side of Fuerteventura.

From Puerto del Rosario and the airport, Morro Jable is reached via the FV-2, a long but direct road running down the eastern side of the island. By car, parking varies a lot between the old centre, the port and the access points to Playa del Matorral; spaces near the promenade can fill up, so it is often better to use inner streets and walk. Tiadhe connects Morro Jable with Puerto del Rosario, Costa Calma, Pájara and other points in the south by several guagua lines, including a specific service towards Cofete and Punta de Jandía. The port of Morro Jable operates a sea connection with Gran Canaria, an important detail if you are boarding with a vehicle or happen to be there around departure times. Within the town, the promenade is easy to walk, although the old centre has slopes.

Playa del Matorral changes noticeably with tide and wind. For a more comfortable swim, check the flag and look for supervised areas; for walking, early morning and sunset are better than midday. If you are going to Cofete, do not squeeze it in as an after-lunch errand: it needs time, slow roads and a clear head. On strongly windy days, the beach is still beautiful, but it can be uncomfortable for lying on the sand. With children, the size of the beach makes clear reference points essential, such as the lighthouse or a specific exit to the promenade. For fish or something more local, the old centre and the area around the port tend to make more sense than the purely hotel-based zones. Carry water even if you are only going for a walk.
