Meloneras (Gran Canaria): promenade, beach and things to do

Meloneras is a tourist strip in southern Gran Canaria, within the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana and right beside Maspalomas. Its character is clear: a well-kept seafront promenade, upper-tier hotels, open-air shopping areas, terraces, restaurants and a pace that is calmer than Playa del Inglés. It is not the place for late-night nightlife or a wild beach; it suits couples, families, travellers who want comfort and visitors who value walking, dining well and watching the sunset without having to move far. It has a reputation as one of Gran Canaria’s most exclusive areas because it concentrates several luxury hotels and services aimed at higher-spending visitors. Even so, the promenade is public and can be enjoyed whether or not you are staying there. Its great strength is the location: from the Faro de Maspalomas you have Maspalomas beach, La Charca and the dunes on one side, and, to the west, the promenade that leads to Meloneras beach.

The Meloneras promenade links the area around the Faro de Maspalomas with Meloneras beach along an easy seafront avenue made for walking, running or moving between terraces. It is one of the most pleasant routes in the south because you can look out to sea for much of the way, with shopping areas alternating with more open stretches. Meloneras beach sits at the far end of the route from the lighthouse: a small cove of fine sand and quiet atmosphere, smaller than Maspalomas and less iconic than the dunes, but practical for a relaxed swim when conditions allow. Some parts of the coast have pebbles and rocky areas, so choose your access point carefully and check the flag. Do not expect one long, picture-postcard sweep of sand; the value of Meloneras lies in the whole promenade-beach-services combination. For a full morning, you can swim, walk to the lighthouse, stop for a drink and return at sunset along the same coastline.

The classic plan is to start or finish at the Faro de Maspalomas, which marks the point between the promenade towards the dunes and the Meloneras promenade. Around the lighthouse there is a shopping boulevard, boutiques, cafés, restaurants and the Centro Etnográfico del Faro, whose opening times are worth checking in advance if you want to go inside. Along the promenade you will find shopping centres, window displays, terraces and access to the Punta Mujeres archaeological site, a coastal heritage site integrated into the area. ExpoMeloneras lies a little further inland and functions as a conference and events venue rather than an everyday tourist attraction, but it helps explain the profile of the area. If you only have one afternoon, walk from the lighthouse towards Meloneras beach in low light and return for sunset. The Dunas de Maspalomas are right beside you, but they deserve their own visit, with enough time and proper respect for the permitted paths.

From the airport, Meloneras is reached via the GC-1 heading south, and the journey by car or taxi is usually around a long half-hour, depending on traffic, time of day and the exact destination. Taxi fares are not fixed: they vary according to current tariffs, supplements and the conditions of the day. From Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the route also follows the GC-1 south, and Turismo de Gran Canaria indicates access via the exits towards Avenida Touroperador Tui or Pasito Blanco-Meloneras. By bus, the practical approach is to check Global routes towards Faro de Maspalomas or the southern tourist areas before setting off. Once in Meloneras, you do not need a car for the promenade: the important parts are designed to be walked. If you are going for dinner or sunset, allow time to park, as the area around the lighthouse and boulevard can get busy at peak times.

Meloneras works especially well in the afternoon. In the morning it can be a peaceful place for a walk, but the area gains character when the sun drops, terraces light up and the promenade fills with people strolling at an unhurried pace. With children, combine a short beach stop, an ice cream and a walk; as a couple, book dinner or arrive early to choose a table with a view. Wear comfortable shoes: it may look compact, but between the lighthouse, boulevard, beach, shops and return walk you can cover a fair distance. In summer, avoid the middle of the day if your plan is to walk the full promenade without continuous shade. If you want to see the dunes, do not leave them until the last minute and do not step into closed or sensitive areas. And if you are looking for a broad sandy beach, Maspalomas may suit you better; Meloneras is more about the promenade, services and sunset than a classic full day of parasol, cool box and hours on the sand.
