Roque Nublo (Gran Canaria): what to see, how to get there and tips

Roque Nublo rises from a volcanic plateau in the highlands of Gran Canaria, within the municipality of Tejeda. Its isolated, vertical outline has come to represent much of the island’s interior landscape: dry summits, deep ravines and ancient rock exposed to the wind. The visit is not just about getting a photo and leaving; the interest lies in walking to the base of the monolith, understanding the scale of the place and seeing the island from a position that changes greatly with the light and clouds.

The usual route is by road to the La Goleta car park, in the Ayacata area, and from there on foot along the signposted trail. The drive crosses highland roads, with bends and changes in gradient, so it is best to take it slowly and bear in mind that visibility can vary. From La Goleta, the walk to Roque Nublo follows mountain terrain, with sections of earth and rock, before reaching the open plateau where the monolith appears.

Although the walk is short, Roque Nublo is at altitude and should not be treated like an urban stroll. Wear proper shoes, bring water, sun protection and a light extra layer: wind and cold can appear even on clear days. Check the forecast before going up, as weather changes quickly in the highlands and mist can greatly reduce the experience. Stay on the trail, avoid exposed edges and do not force the visit if the ground is wet or visibility is poor.
