Mercadillo de Teror: opening hours and what to buy

The Mercadillo de Teror is one of Gran Canaria’s most characterful Sunday markets. Its appeal is not only the stalls, but the whole setting: the square, the lanes of the old town, the traditional balconies and the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pino at the heart of the visit. On Sundays, from 9:00 to 15:00, you will find agricultural produce, cured meats, cheeses, Cistercian sweets, clothing, crafts and religious items. Chorizo de Teror is the best-known product, but it is worth looking out for cheeses, bread, pastries and small local specialities too. It fits neatly into a morning in the northern interior of the island, especially if you want a break from beaches and shopping centres. The market can get very busy, and the atmosphere changes a lot as the morning goes on. For a short visit, it gives a clear sense of the island’s blend of devotion, local food and village life.

Teror sits in the northern interior of Gran Canaria and is reached by road from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Arucas, Firgas or Valleseco. By car, the most practical plan is to arrive early and use the designated car parks or parking areas nearby, allowing for a walk into the old town. Sundays bring more traffic and some street restrictions, so do not cut it fine if you have a lunch booking or another route planned afterwards. You can also reach Teror by guagua, the local bus, from Las Palmas and other towns, checking Sunday timetables in advance. Once in Teror, the market is explored on foot around the basilica and the surrounding streets. If you are driving a large hire car, park a little farther out and avoid pushing into the narrow lanes.

Arrive before 10:30 if you want parking to be less stressful and time to see the stalls before the main flow of visitors. Bring some cash for small purchases, even though some stalls now accept cards. If you buy chorizo, cheese or sweets, think about the heat in the car and how long you still have before returning to your accommodation. The old town deserves an unhurried wander: look at the basilica façade, the houses with wooden balconies and the traditional food shops. Do not turn the visit into a rush to buy things; it works best as a mix of market, stroll and coffee. If you are with children, agree a meeting point, because the streets fill up. On rainy days, think about footwear and an extra layer: Teror can feel cooler than the coast.
