Playa del Confital, Gran Canaria: surf, rock pools and how to get there
El Confital is the semi-wild beach that closes the bay beyond Las Canteras, on the volcanic peninsula of La Isleta in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It is a landscape of rock platforms, tidal pools and a strip of coarse sand, with open views back to the city and out across the Atlantic. It is one of the Canary Islands’ great surf sanctuaries thanks to its right-hand wave, considered among the best in Europe.
What it is and why go
El Confital is the natural continuation of Las Canteras to the north, already within the La Isleta peninsula. Here the urban beach gives way to a raw coastal landscape of volcanic rock platforms, low cliffs and, at the far end, a narrow strip of coarse sand. Its name comes from pale calcareous formations, created by algae, that look like sugared sweets scattered along the shore. This is a protected setting and a favourite with people from the city, with the skyline of Las Palmas and the open Atlantic as the backdrop. It is a place for walking, watching the sea and feeling close to nature without leaving the city behind.
Surf, swimming and rock pools
El Confital is famous above all for its wave: a powerful, long right-hander breaking over a rocky bottom, widely regarded as one of the best in Europe and regularly used for professional-level qualifying surf events. It is a serious wave for experienced surfers only, with an unforgiving seabed and currents. At low tide, rock pools and natural swimming holes appear between the volcanic platforms, ideal for quietly observing marine life. Access to the water is over rock, so suitable footwear and real caution are essential, especially with swell, slippery surfaces and the tide. Before swimming, always check the current official signs.
How to get there
The easiest and most recommended way to arrive is on foot: from the northern end of Las Canteras, beside La Puntilla, a pleasant coastal path of timber walkway and dirt track follows the shore to the beach in a short, flat walk. By car, access is through La Isleta, but traffic towards El Confital has been restricted by a barrier installed in 2024, so you will often need to park earlier and finish on foot. El Confital forms part of the La Isleta Protected Natural Area; at the end of the bay, the coast is closed off by a fence marking a military zone, which must not be crossed.
When to go
For walking and enjoying the rock pools, low tide is your best ally: it reveals the rock platforms and natural pools. For surfing, El Confital works mainly with groundswell, more common in autumn and winter when the North Atlantic sends in larger seas; on those days, the atmosphere is strictly for experienced surfers. Sunset light, with the city beginning to glow across the bay, is one of its great summer pleasures. Check sea and wind conditions before you go, and avoid days with heavy swell if you are not there to surf.
Tips for visiting
El Confital is semi-wild: do not expect beach bars, sunbeds or parasols, and facilities are minimal, so bring water, shade, sun protection and your own food, and take all rubbish away with you. Water shoes or flip-flops with proper grip make a real difference on the rocks. This is a protected natural space and part of the beach has traditionally been used by naturists, so respect and coexistence matter. The ideal plan is to combine it with Las Canteras, linking both by the coastal path, and always follow the signs, especially those relating to sea conditions and the boundary of the military zone.
