Caldera Blanca: the route to Lanzarote’s great crater
Caldera Blanca is one of Lanzarote’s most spectacular volcanoes, with a crater approximately 1.2 kilometres in diameter and a route that crosses malpaís lava fields to the rim of the caldera. It lies beside the volcanic surroundings of Timanfaya and requires preparation: this is a long walk, with no shade and no water along the route.

The usual access is as a circular hiking route across volcanic terrain. The path crosses lava fields and stony sections before gaining height towards the crater rim, with views towards the Montañas del Fuego and the volcanic landscape of western Lanzarote.

Caldera Blanca sits within the wider landscape influenced by Timanfaya, but the experience is different: more physical, quieter and more closely tied to hiking. It is a good way to understand that Lanzarote is not only viewpoints and roads, but also walking across recent geology.

The route is free to access, but it should not be treated like an urban stroll. There is no shade or water along the way, the ground can be uncomfortable and the sun weighs heavily on clear days. Proper footwear, enough water and sun protection are not extras: they are part of the visit.

A short climb reaches the rim of Caldera Blanca, over a kilometre across; from the top you command the whole Fire Mountains park.
Back the same way
Return along the same path, with the Timanfaya lava field ahead and La Caldereta as your reference back to the car park.
