Costa Teguise (Lanzarote): a practical beach guide

Costa Teguise is a planned tourist development, with wide avenues, a seafront promenade, hotels, apartments and medium-sized shopping centres. It does not have the old harbour feel of Puerto del Carmen or the village atmosphere of Playa Blanca, but it offers a very comfortable stay in return: manageable distances, beaches spread across different sections and a less nightlife-driven mood than other parts of Lanzarote. Las Cucharas is its best-known beach, partly because of the wind and the windsurfing; Bastián and El Jablillo often work better for those seeking more sheltered swimming, always depending on sea conditions. It is a good base for families, couples wanting calm and travellers planning to visit Jameos del Agua, Cueva de los Verdes, Haría or Famara. It also suits anyone who prefers to be close to Arrecife without sleeping in the capital. Its appeal is practical rather than theatrical: it may not dazzle with one single postcard view, but it handles a week of beach time, simple dinners and northern excursions very well.

From Arrecife, Costa Teguise is reached via the LZ-14 and LZ-18, with quick access from the airport using the ring road and the LZ-2. By car, parking is spread through streets and parking areas close to the beaches; on good windy days for watersports, Las Cucharas can draw more activity. IntercityBus Lanzarote connects Costa Teguise with Arrecife, Puerto del Carmen and other towns on regular routes, useful if you do not want to depend on a car all the time. Within the resort, the best approach is to walk along the seafront promenade and choose your beach according to the day: Las Cucharas for atmosphere and sport, Bastián for a calmer plan, El Jablillo for more enclosed swimming when the sea allows, all without complicating the return to your accommodation.

The wind shapes much of the experience. If you are with children or want an easy swim, it is worth looking first at Bastián or El Jablillo before settling on Las Cucharas. If the aim is to see the windsurfing scene, Las Cucharas makes more sense from mid-morning and in the afternoon, when the beach fills with boards and schools. The promenade is comfortable for pushchairs and for walking without steep gradients. For food, the area works better around the commercial centres and promenade than along the more inland streets. If you want to combine beach time with an excursion, Costa Teguise lets you head north early and return for an afternoon swim without crossing the whole island. A light windbreaker is not excessive, even on clear days.
