Playa de Famara (Lanzarote): the great wild beach of the north-west

Famara is not an urban beach or a sheltered cove. It is a long, open and highly exposed beach in the municipality of Teguise, at the foot of the Risco de Famara. Its appeal lies in the scale of the landscape. The sand, the cliffs, the wind and the view towards La Graciosa create one of Lanzarote’s most recognisable natural scenes. It is especially worth visiting if you want to walk, watch the sunset, photograph volcanic scenery and understand the wilder side of the island’s north.

Famara is a landmark for surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. Schools operate here and there is activity for much of the year, but that same character is precisely why it should not be treated as an easy bathing beach. Waves, currents and wind can change the experience considerably. If you are visiting with children or do not know the area, the sensible choice is to stay close to the shore, check the flag if there is one and avoid going far out. Some stretches may have little or no lifeguard cover.

Beside the beach is Caleta de Famara, a fishing village with simple streets, a local feel and basic services to round out the visit. It is a good place to eat something, hire equipment if you plan to surf, or simply wander before or after the beach. It also has cultural weight: César Manrique spent part of his childhood here, and the connection between the artist, the sea and Lanzarote’s landscape makes more sense once you see this unvarnished setting.

Famara works very well as a late-afternoon stop if you are coming from the north, or as a slower plan if you are exploring Teguise and the north-west coast. From Costa Teguise or Puerto del Carmen, you reach it by car across the island’s interior; from Haría or the Risco area, the route lets you link mountain scenery with the coast. If the day is very windy, it is still a superb place to walk and look out to sea, even if settling on the sand is less tempting.

Access is open and free, with informal parking around the beach and the village. Bring sun and wind protection, water and comfortable footwear if you want a longer walk. This is not the most comfortable beach for a classic day of parasol and calm swimming; other resort areas are better for that. Famara is best enjoyed on its own terms: open, changeable, photogenic and a little untamed.
