Cueva de los Verdes (Lanzarote): the visit, how to get there and tips

Cueva de los Verdes is one of the visitable sections of the great volcanic tube formed by eruptions of La Corona volcano in northern Lanzarote. It lies in the municipality of Haría and is managed by the Centros de Arte, Cultura y Turismo de Lanzarote. Unlike Jameos del Agua, the experience here is centred on walking inside the lava, with atmospheric lighting, narrow passages, vaulted spaces and changes in height. The visit feels part underground journey and part geological theatre, which is why it is best done with a guide and full attention.

The route reveals layered galleries, lava walls, mineral deposits, ochre, black and reddish tones, and chambers where the lighting changes how the space is perceived. The visitable route is guided and helps explain how magma opened a tunnel beneath the surface before cooling. It is also tied to local history: for centuries, these caves served as a refuge from pirate raids. One of its great attractions is the ending of the visit, which works best if nobody tells you in advance. Avoid searching for it online and let the guide reveal it.

Cueva de los Verdes is in Haría, in northern Lanzarote, with access via the LZ-204. By car, it is easy to reach from the LZ-1, the road that runs up the north-east coast towards Arrieta, Punta Mujeres and Órzola. The natural combination is to visit Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua in the same morning or afternoon, as they are very close to each other. If you are coming from the tourist south of the island, allow for a longer route and consider adding Mirador del Río, Haría or a lunch stop on the north coast.

Cueva de los Verdes is a paid attraction and operates as a guided visit organised by the CACT of Lanzarote. Tickets, available times and access arrangements can change, so check the latest opening hours and prices on the official CACT Lanzarote website before planning your trip. Booking in advance is especially advisable in high season, on long weekends and on busy days. Arrive with time to spare, because access depends on the assigned time slot and this is not a visit best improvised at the last minute.

Wear comfortable shoes with a good sole, as the floor can be uneven and there are changes in level. The temperature inside is stable and pleasant, but a light layer is useful if you feel the cold. The visit is not recommended for people with severe claustrophobia or for anyone with mobility difficulties, as the route is not adapted. Pushchairs cannot enter; with small children, a baby carrier is the better option. Always follow the guide, respect the photography instructions and avoid separating from the group in narrow sections.

Cueva de los Verdes has one of Lanzarote’s most talked-about endings: a secret that guides reveal at the end of the visit and have asked visitors not to disclose for decades. It is a surprising natural effect, now part of the cave’s signature, and knowing it before entering would spoil much of the experience. It is enough to know that reaching the end is worthwhile and that it plays with the way the cave itself is perceived. The setting already has power of its own: the cave belongs to the volcanic tube of La Corona, a system of around 7-8 kilometres considered among the longest in the world, with a submarine section known as the Túnel de la Atlántida. Beyond its geological value, it was historically used as a refuge by the population during pirate attacks in the 16th and 17th centuries.
