Los Hervideros (Lanzarote): what to see, how to get there and tips

Los Hervideros is one of Lanzarote’s most forceful coastal landscapes: a strip of solidified lava opened into cracks, caves and natural balconies, where the swell enters under pressure and bursts out as foam. It lies in the municipality of Yaiza, close to El Golfo, the Salinas de Janubio and the volcanic setting of Timanfaya. This is not a place for swimming or for wandering without care; it is a living viewpoint over the power of the Atlantic. The visit is especially worthwhile when there is a moderate ground swell, always respecting signs, closures and coastal alerts.

The essential experience is the short viewpoint route carved into the volcanic rock. From several balconies, you can watch the water strike the cavities, rise through the blowholes and seem to boil beneath your feet. The contrast between black lava, white foam and open ocean is the main attraction, rather than any single point. Move slowly, wait for several sets of waves and do not settle for the first photograph. Nearby, you can complete the route with El Golfo and Charco de los Clicos, the Salinas de Janubio or a prior visit to Timanfaya.

The easiest way to reach Los Hervideros is by car. From Playa Blanca or Arrecife, take the LZ-2 towards Yaiza and connect with the coastal road LZ-703 towards El Golfo and Los Hervideros, depending on the state of the road and current signage. The car park is beside the start of the route, so the visit does not require a long walk. Public transport is rarely practical for this stop; without a car, it works better as part of an excursion through the south-west with Timanfaya, Janubio and El Golfo.

Los Hervideros is a natural area with free and open access, with no ticket office or entry fee. Even so, as it lies on an exposed coast, the visit depends on the sea, wind and any temporary closures or restrictions for safety reasons. Before going in stormy weather, strong swell or meteorological warnings, check official alerts and do not force the stop. The best experience is often in side light, early in the day or at sunset, when the volcanic relief gains texture and the sun does not flatten the scene.

Wear stable footwear, avoid approaching unprotected edges and do not cross fences or ignore signs, even if you see others doing so. The area can be more dramatic when the sea is active, but that is also when it demands the most caution, especially with children. It is not a beach, there is little meaningful shade and the wind can be strong, so water, a hat and a light layer are useful. For a complete route, reserve the morning for Timanfaya, then head down towards Janubio, Los Hervideros and El Golfo, leaving time for fish by the coast of Yaiza.
