Los Charcones, Lanzarote: natural pools in Yaiza and essential safety advice

Los Charcones are a chain of natural rock pools carved into the volcanic shore of southern Lanzarote. When the sea is calm and the light is right, the water settles into basins of green and turquoise, with the open Atlantic beyond. The appeal is the contrast of lava, salt air and clear water, not comfort or facilities. This is a bare, elemental landscape rather than a managed beach, which is exactly why you need to look carefully before entering the water and understand how the sea is moving.

The area lies in the municipality of Yaiza, near Playa Blanca, on an exposed stretch of Lanzarote’s south-west coast. Access is via tracks and non-urban approaches, so go slowly, respect the terrain and do not drive where the vehicle could damage the ground. Do not expect conventional beach infrastructure: the reference point here is the volcanic coast and the pools, not an organised bathing area. If you do not know the area, visit in daylight and avoid improvising in poor light.

Safety comes first at Los Charcones. Do not swim if there is swell, strong surf, visible currents or water surging forcefully into the natural pools. Volcanic rock can cut and become slippery, so wear suitable footwear and move slowly. There are no services, guaranteed shade or lifeguards, so bring water, sun protection and take every bit of rubbish away with you. If you visit with children or people who are not used to the sea, keep well back from the edge and treat the visit as a coastal walk, not as a guaranteed swim.
