Timanfaya (Lanzarote): Montañas del Fuego, route and visit tips

Timanfaya is Lanzarote’s great volcanic landscape: lava fields, cones, black, red and ochre tones, and a sense of territory that feels recent on the geological scale of the Canary Islands. The 18th-century eruptions transformed this part of the island and left an area of high scientific and scenic value. Public visits are controlled to protect the park. At Islote de Hilario, geothermal demonstrations show the heat still held beneath the surface.

The main tourist access is by road to the Montañas del Fuego area, between the municipalities of Yaiza and Tinajo. From there, the visit is channelled through the park reception area and the Ruta de los Volcanes, which is travelled on an authorised bus. This is not a place for driving down random tracks or improvising walking routes. If you are going by car, check the official website beforehand to confirm access conditions, capacity and how the route is operating.

Timanfaya is a national park, and conservation comes first: you cannot walk freely outside marked routes or collect stones or volcanic material. Entry and the route are paid, with capacity and conditions that may change, so it is worth checking the official website before you go. Bring water, sun protection and a light layer if it is windy. The experience is best enjoyed by accepting the park’s rhythm, without trying to leave the permitted circuit.

The heart of Timanfaya is not explored independently: it is visited only on the Ruta de los Volcanes bus, included with entry to the Islote de Hilario visitor area. From this point, where you will also find César Manrique’s El Diablo restaurant with its grill using volcanic heat, the vehicle covers around 14 kilometres between craters and volcanic landscapes with an audio explanation. The rule is clear: this route cannot be done on foot or in your own car. Anyone who wants to walk in the park must choose authorised alternatives, such as Tremesana, with a guide, limited places and reservation, or the coastal route. The camel stop, with dromedary rides, is on the southern slope and outside Islote de Hilario. For a smoother visit, go early: by mid-morning, car queues often form on the LZ-67 before the access point.
