Mirador del Río (Lanzarote): views of La Graciosa from the Risco de Famara

Mirador del Río is not just a viewpoint: it is an architectural intervention integrated into the cliff, designed so the building is almost absorbed by the rock. César Manrique turned the height of northern Lanzarote into a contained experience, with curved interiors, large openings towards the sea and a terrace that places La Graciosa directly in front of the visitor. The interest lies in that combination of landscape and design: Atlantic, cliff, volcanic light and architecture that does not compete with the place.

The viewpoint is in the municipality of Haría, in northern Lanzarote, above the Risco de Famara. It is reached by road from the villages of the north and from the route that links with the island’s interior. The approach already sets the scene: arid slopes, open horizon and a change in scale as you draw near the cliff edge. As it is one of Lanzarote’s Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism, entry is required to visit the site and it is advisable to check the official website before going.

Mirador del Río depends greatly on visibility. If the day is overcast or there is strong calima, the view over La Graciosa may lose clarity, so check the forecast if the visit is mainly about the landscape. Do not reduce the plan to the photo: spend time inside, looking at how Manrique frames the horizon and how the rock contrasts with the building’s white lines. Mirador del Río and the Haría viewpoint are often confused, but they are different places and should be planned separately. Mirador del Río is the César Manrique work inaugurated in 1973, carved into the top of the Risco de Famara at around 470 metres above sea level, with a large panoramic room facing La Graciosa and the Chinijo Archipelago. It belongs to the CACT network, has paid entry and includes a glass-fronted café, shop and sculptural elements integrated into the building. The Haría viewpoint, also known as Mirador de los Valles, is a free roadside viewpoint on the Teguise-Haría road, looking towards the valley of the thousand palms. They are about 10-15 minutes apart by car, so they combine well on a northern route, but they do not offer the same experience or the same type of visit.
