Punta Mujeres (Lanzarote): Natural Pools and Volcanic Coast in the North

Punta Mujeres is best enjoyed through details: white houses beside the sea, steps leading down to natural pools, black lava, clear water and the feel of a real village. It is not a long sandy beach or a resort. This is an indented coastline where bathing happens in seawater pools and rock pools, some simply adapted and others more natural. Its appeal lies in that blend of volcanic landscape and everyday local life.

The pools and rock pools of Punta Mujeres depend on the state of the sea and the tide. When the Atlantic is calm, they offer one of the loveliest swims in northern Lanzarote; when swell comes in, it is better to look from outside and not force it. Access is free, but that does not remove the need for care: volcanic rock can be slippery, edges are hard and the sea sets the rules. Water shoes, calm and common sense help a great deal.

Punta Mujeres is very close to Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes, so it fits neatly into a route through the north. You can visit one of the volcanic centres, stop for lunch or a walk in the village and finish with a swim if the sea allows. It also sits on the axis of Órzola, Arrieta and northern Haría, an area with an identity quite distinct from the more touristic Lanzarote.

It is worth arriving with the right expectations: Punta Mujeres is not trying to impress with major infrastructure, but with a simple, deeply local coastline. There are lovely corners for walking, watching the sea and getting into the water on favourable days. The village can seem understated if you rush through it; it opens up much more if you walk without a fixed plan, moving in and out of the first line of the coast. This is a place to slow down.

Access to the village and its bathing areas is free of charge. Parking may require patience on busy days, as the streets are small in scale. Wear footwear with good grip if you plan to go down onto the rocks, and avoid bathing if the sea is hitting hard. For a fuller route, combine Punta Mujeres with the northern stretch towards Órzola or with a panoramic visit to Mirador del Río.
