Drago Milenario: prices, opening hours and viewpoints

The Drago Milenario of Icod de los Vinos is not just a famous tree: it is a piece of natural, cultural and urban heritage. Considered one of the oldest dragon trees in the archipelago, the specimen is around 16 metres high and has a broad base, which explains its monumental presence even when seen from outside. The more cautious published estimate places its age at around 800 years, as dragon trees cannot be dated by rings as straightforwardly as many other trees. Inside Parque del Drago, the visit adds context: paths, Canarian flora, young dragon trees, an ethnographic cave, a wine press and several close viewpoints that help convey the true scale of the tree. If you only want a quick photograph, the external viewpoint is enough; if you are interested in the botanical setting and the history of Icod, entering the park is worthwhile. It is also set within a small garden that helps read the thermophilous vegetation of northern Tenerife without turning the stop into a long visit.

The park is in the historic centre of Icod de los Vinos, beside the Church of San Marcos and Plaza de la Constitución. By car, the usual approach is via the TF-5 or the northern road, parking in the surrounding urban car parks before walking to the entrance; avoid trying to reach the gate at busier times. By public transport, buses connect Icod with other towns in northern Tenerife, and from the station or central stops you can walk to the park. The visit combines well with Garachico, Cueva del Viento or a walk through the old town. In high season, allow time to park and walk through sloping streets.

General admission to Parque del Drago costs €5, with a €3 rate for students and pensioners, €2.50 for children under 8 and free access for residents of Icod de los Vinos. Opening hours are 9:00 to 20:00 from April to September and 10:00 to 18:00 from October to March. Allow 30 to 60 minutes if you are not rushing. For photography, side light early in the morning or late in the afternoon works better than high sun. If you have reduced mobility, check the route before entering: there are garden areas and changes in level. The park is small, but it is best not to leave the visit until just before closing, as access may affect the pace of your visit.
