Playa El Bollullo (Tenerife): Black Sand and Wild Northern Coast

El Bollullo is one of the most beautiful beaches in northern Tenerife because it keeps a largely undeveloped feel: dark volcanic sand, cliffs, agricultural vegetation and an Atlantic with real presence. It lies in the El Rincón area, tied to the banana-growing landscape of La Orotava and very close to Puerto de la Cruz. This is not a resort beach or a seafront-promenade beach: you come for nature, sunsets, walking and the feeling of a wilder coast. That same beauty requires judgement.

Reaching the beach involves walking along a path or access stretch with a slope, so comfortable footwear is sensible and it is better not to carry more than necessary. The approach is part of the experience: banana plantations, sea views and the sense of leaving the urban edge for somewhere more hidden. It is not the ideal place to come down with pushchairs, heavy bags or people with reduced mobility. Before going, check the condition of the access and respect any local closures or signs.

El Bollullo is open to the northern Atlantic, with swell that can change quickly and currents that are not always obvious from the shore. Do not assume there will be lifeguards or suitable swimming conditions. If there is groundswell, an adverse flag, strong foam or any doubt, the sensible choice is to stay out of the water and enjoy the beach from the sand. This is a beach where you watch the sea carefully before entering, not one where you jump in simply because the view is tempting.

The most rewarding plan is simple: descend slowly, walk on the sand, look at the cliffs, take photographs and stay to watch the light change. There is a small beach bar in the area, but do not base the visit on fixed services, as they may vary by season, conditions or management. Nearby pools and stretches of coast can round out the walk if the state of the sea allows safe movement. Bring water, sun protection and a bag to carry your rubbish back up.

El Bollullo works very well as a natural counterpoint to Puerto de la Cruz: first the town, gardens or seafront; then a wilder black-sand beach. It can also form part of a day around La Orotava and the valley, provided the schedule is not too tight. If you go for sunset, allow enough daylight for the walk back up safely. The beach is freely accessible on foot, but the setting is unforgiving if the sea or weather turns difficult.
