What it is and why go

Playa de Troya is one of the longest-established and most popular urban beaches on the Adeje coast. It is split into two adjoining sections, Troya I and Troya II, which together form a continuous strip of sand on the edge between Costa Adeje and Playa de las Américas. Its real strength is location: hotels, apartments, shops and restaurants are all within easy walking distance, with a lively promenade running from one end to the other. This is a beach for visitors who want to swim without leaving the resort centre, with atmosphere, convenience and generally calm sea conditions. In high season it can get very busy because it sits so close to the main accommodation areas.

The beach and facilities

The sand is fine, dark and volcanic in origin, with the beach measuring roughly 650 metres long and about 20 metres wide. It has Blue Flag status, recognising environmental quality, cleanliness and safety. Facilities include lifeguard supervision in season, sunbed and parasol hire, showers, foot showers, toilets and landscaped walking areas. It is accessible for people with reduced mobility, with a ramp down to the sand and a walkway towards the shoreline. Along the seafront you will find beach bars, cafés, ice-cream shops, other businesses and tourist information points.

How to get there

By car, take the southern motorway TF-1 and leave at exit 28 for Playa de las Américas; from Tenerife South Airport it is about 20 kilometres, or around 20 minutes. There is parking in the surrounding streets, particularly around Avenida de los Pueblos, though in high season it is worth arriving early, before mid-morning, if you want a space nearby. By public transport, TITSA runs numerous guaguas serving the area, stopping at Playa de las Américas bus station and around San Eugenio, both very close to the beach; from there, it is only a short walk.

When to go and swimming

The sea at Playa de Troya is usually calm: the beach sections are sheltered and the swell is generally gentle, making it comfortable for swimming and suitable for families. The shoreline slopes gradually into the water. Sea temperature is around 22 degrees in summer and about 19 in winter, so it is enjoyable for much of the year thanks to the climate in southern Tenerife. To avoid the busiest hours and the strongest sun, aim for early morning or mid-afternoon. Spring and autumn usually feel more relaxed than the peak summer period.

Tips for visiting

Playa de Troya is ideal for combining with the rest of the tourist south-west. The seafront promenade links easily with Playa de las Américas in one direction and the beaches of Costa Adeje in the other, so you can walk between several beaches in a single day. Siam Park water park is also very close, just a few minutes away, and works well as part of a family day out. Bring water shoes if hot volcanic sand bothers you at midday, reserve a sunbed early in summer, and use the promenade beach bars for lunch without straying far from the shore.
