Masca (Tenerife): the village, the views and the ravine

Masca is one of the most recognisable landscapes in north-west Tenerife: a small hamlet tucked between volcanic walls and green terraces, with a sense of remoteness that explains much of its appeal. It belongs to Buenavista del Norte and sits within the Teno massif, a rugged area where the road, viewpoints and shifting light are almost as much part of the experience as the village itself. It is worth visiting for its mix of rural architecture, deep views into the ravine and a mountain atmosphere that feels far removed from the tourist coast.

The essential thing is to walk slowly through the hamlet, pause at its viewpoints and notice how the houses cling to the slope, with Roque de Masca and the ravine walls closing the scene. The best-known attraction is the Barranco de Masca, which drops towards the sea, but it should not be treated as an improvised hike: access is regulated. If you want to do the trail, book through the official Barranco de Masca system and check in advance that it is open. To round out the day, combine Masca with Teno Alto, Punta de Teno or Garachico.

The usual way to arrive is by road from Buenavista del Norte or Santiago del Teide, always with patience. The access road is narrow, winding and has sections where you need to drive with particular care, especially when there is tourist traffic or buses. If you come by car, allow enough time and do not rely on a quick stop, as parking can be limited. Public transport or organised excursions are also worth considering if you would rather avoid a demanding mountain road.

The village of Masca and its viewpoints can be visited freely, but the Barranco de Masca operates with regulated access, advance booking and capacity limits. It is no longer enough simply to arrive and start walking as was possible years ago: you must check the official Barranco de Masca system, confirm availability and follow the current conditions. The route is demanding and may close for safety, weather or conservation reasons. Wear proper footwear if you have a trail booking, and think of the village visit and the ravine hike as two separate plans.

Go early or late in the afternoon if you want a quieter experience and better light on the relief of the Teno massif. Do not reduce Masca to a photo from the car park: walk through the village, look for the changes in perspective and respect the hamlet’s private areas. If you are exploring the north-west, link Masca with Garachico, Buenavista del Norte or Punta de Teno. For the ravine, plan separately, with a confirmed booking and conditions checked again on the day.
