Barranco de Masca, Tenerife: the route, booking and essential tips
The Barranco de Masca is one of the most spectacular descents in the Canary Islands: a gorge in the Teno massif (Buenavista del Norte, north-west Tenerife) running from the hamlet of Masca, between vertical walls hundreds of metres high, down to a cove by the sea. It is not the village of Masca itself, but the route that starts there. Access is regulated by advance booking and capacity limits: you must reserve through the official system before going, and the return is by boat to Los Gigantes.
What it is and why do it
This is the descent of a deep ravine within the Teno Rural Park, through volcanic terrain millions of years old and carved by erosion. The trail starts in the hamlet of Masca and enters between rock walls that narrow as the route approaches the ocean, ending at a pebble cove facing the cliffs of Los Gigantes. The reward is the scenery: improbable rock formations, vegetation on old agricultural terraces and a feeling of isolation that is hard to find elsewhere on the island. It is one of Tenerife’s most sought-after hikes, which is precisely why access is controlled.
What the route is like
The descent is around 3.9 kilometres long with approximately 580 metres of elevation loss, and usually takes about three hours downhill depending on pace and stops. The difficulty is high: uneven rocky ground, passages beside the streambed, water crossings where the current can be strong in winter, and sections where you need to use your hands. This is not a stroll. A helmet is compulsory throughout the route because of rockfall risk; staff from Camino de Masca provide one on loan at the visitor centre, to be returned at the end. Good fitness and mountain footwear are strongly recommended.
Booking and regulated access
The ravine can only be walked with advance booking through the official system (caminobarrancodemasca.com), managed by Buenavista del Norte Town Council. Capacity is limited by time slots, so book well ahead, especially in high season. The activity operates on specific days of the week and during morning hours, and closes whenever weather conditions or the state of the streambed compromise safety. There is no free access: without a booking, entry is not allowed. Fees vary according to residency and age; check the exact price and availability on the official system before planning your visit.
How to get there and return
The route begins in the hamlet of Masca, reached by mountain road from Santiago del Teide or Buenavista del Norte. As parking is very limited, access to the starting area is by shuttle connecting with the trailhead. You do not return on foot: once you reach the cove, you must also have booked the compulsory sea transfer by boat or kayak from the Masca jetty to the harbour at Los Gigantes, where the day finishes. For that reason, the reservation involves two parts: access to the ravine and the maritime transport back.
Tips and safety
This is a demanding, regulated route, so do not improvise. Bring closed mountain boots, at least 1.5 litres of water per person, walking poles, a cap, sun protection and suitable clothing. The minimum permitted age is eight, and the route is recommended only for people in good physical condition; minors need authorisation. Arrive with time to spare before your booked slot, stay on the marked path and follow staff instructions. Check the forecast and the condition of the ravine before going, as closures due to weather or water flow in the streambed are common and non-negotiable. Caution here is not optional.
