Teide Cable Car (Teleférico del Teide): ascent, permits and tips

The Teide Cable Car lets you gain altitude quickly inside Teide National Park and reach a high-mountain volcanic setting, with wide views over Tenerife and, in good weather, other islands in the archipelago. The upper station is close to the summit, but it is not the same as standing on the peak: the final access is regulated. The experience changes dramatically with wind, cloud and temperature, so it is best treated as a mountain activity, not just a scenic ride. At the top, the landscape is stark, bright and very exposed.

The base station is inside Teide National Park and can be reached by road from different parts of Tenerife, including the north, the metropolitan area and the south of the island. Parking and traffic can affect the visit on busy days, so it is worth planning your arrival with time to spare. Cable car tickets should be booked through official channels. If you also want to take the trail to the summit of Mount Teide, you need to reserve the specific permit, which is separate from the cable car ticket and subject to availability.

Book both the cable car and the summit permit in advance if your aim is to reach the peak. At the top it can be cold and very windy, with sudden changes in visibility even when the weather lower down feels mild, so bring warm clothing, sunglasses and suitable footwear. The altitude is noticeable: walk slowly, drink water and do not push on if you feel dizzy, develop a headache or feel unwell.
