Jardín Botánico in Puerto de la Cruz: hours, ticket and visit

The Jardín Botánico in Puerto de la Cruz is, properly, the Jardín de Aclimatación de La Orotava. It was created in 1788 to cultivate tropical species on Spanish territory and acclimatise them before moving them to royal gardens on the mainland, an origin that explains both its historic layout and its collection of plants from different continents. Today it is a calm place for a walk, with shade, monumental trees, palms, ficus, tropical species and an atmosphere quite unlike the seafront of Puerto de la Cruz. It is not a park of big attractions: its interest lies in slowing down and noticing leaves, roots, textures and plant scales that are rarely seen together. For a northern Tenerife guide, it provides an ideal counterpoint to coast, urban heritage and cultivated nature. It also works as a climate break: on hot or calima days, the tree cover makes the visit gentler than many urban spaces, while remaining compact and easy to manage.

The garden is at Calle Retama 2, in Puerto de la Cruz. If you are staying in the tourist area, you can probably walk there or take a taxi in a few minutes. By car, the practical option is to look for parking in the surrounding streets and allow for a short walk, as it is not ideal to treat it as a door-to-door access point at busy times. From other parts of northern Tenerife, Puerto de la Cruz is well connected by road and guagua. The visit pairs well with La Orotava, the old centre of Puerto de la Cruz, Lago Martiánez or a wider route around the valley. Calle Retama is in the La Paz area, with slopes from some parts of the town, so keep that in mind if you are walking with a pushchair or older travellers.

The garden opens every day from 9:00 to 18:00, except for stated closures on 1 January, Good Friday and 25 December. Admission costs €3, a low price for a visit that can last between 45 minutes and an hour and a half. Go in the morning if you want less heat and better light beneath the trees. Wear comfortable shoes and do not rush the circuit: the pleasure is in the botanical detail, not in ticking off a monument. The library and herbarium have reduced hours and work by prior appointment, so do not plan them as part of a spontaneous visit. If time is tight, prioritise the historic garden and leave specialist consultations for another arranged occasion.
