Playa de La Tejita: a natural beach beside Montaña Roja

La Tejita stands out for its scale and its sense of open landscape. It is not the typical urban beach of southern Tenerife: here the dark sand, the Atlantic, the volcanic profile of Montaña Roja and a much less built-up coastline set the tone. That combination makes it one of the island’s most recognisable natural beaches.

Montaña Roja dominates the view and forms part of a nature reserve that gives the whole area its identity. Its reddish silhouette, the wind and the closeness of the coast create a setting very different from the more urbanised beaches of the south. The visit calls for care: stay on marked paths in sensitive areas, leave no rubbish and avoid stepping on vegetation.

La Tejita is an exposed beach. It can have magnificent days, but also strong wind, waves and currents that should not be underestimated. If the sea feels uncomfortable, the best decision is to stay on the sand or walk along the shore. For families or less confident swimmers, it is important to look at the real conditions of the day and not rely only on the beach’s broad, open appearance.

The atmosphere is usually freer and more natural than in other resort areas. There is a naturist tradition at one end, sharing the beach with people who come simply to walk, sunbathe or enjoy the landscape. The key is distance, discretion and respect for the shared use of a large open space.

The most natural combination is El Médano, where wind, surf and local life complete the experience. La Tejita can also fit into a route through southern Tenerife if you want a natural pause away from the more built-up coastline, always leaving room to adapt the plan to the wind.
