Montaña Roja, Tenerife: volcanic trail beside El Médano

Montaña Roja is an immediate visual landmark in southern Tenerife. Its colour, silhouette and position between sand and ocean give the landscapes of El Médano and La Tejita an identity quite unlike other tourist areas. It is not a high mountain, but it has unmistakable presence.

The ascent is relatively short, but it should not be treated as a flip-flop stroll. Expect volcanic ground, a slope, wind and exposure to the sun. From the top, the view opens clearly over the Granadilla coastline, with La Tejita on one side, El Médano on the other and the Atlantic framing the whole scene.

The area is protected as a special nature reserve, so visitors should stay on permitted paths, avoid stepping on sensitive vegetation and leave no waste behind. The beauty of Montaña Roja depends precisely on that mix of volcanic cone, sand, salt air and open spaces without excessive immediate urbanisation.

Wind is part of the character of this place. El Médano is a reference point for windsurfing and kitesurfing, while La Tejita offers a wide, natural beach. If swimming is part of the plan, judge the sea as it is on the day: the setting can be spectacular and, at the same time, uncomfortable for swimmers not used to wind and swell.

The most complete plan is to climb or skirt Montaña Roja, then walk along Playa de La Tejita and finish in El Médano for lunch or a seafront stroll in its local atmosphere. It is a simple, highly visual route and one of the clearest expressions of Tenerife’s natural south.
