Los Gigantes, Tenerife: cliffs, viewpoints and boat trips

Los Gigantes is one of Tenerife’s great coastal landscapes: a vast volcanic wall rising straight from the sea in the municipality of Santiago del Teide. The cliffs, reaching up to around 600 metres, are striking from land and even more dramatic from the water. The coastal village gives you time to take in the view, stroll by the marina and arrange boat trips along the island’s western coast. It is especially worthwhile if you want monumental scenery, a working harbour atmosphere and an Atlantic excursion without straying too far from the southern resort areas.

A simple visit starts in the village of Los Gigantes, with views from around the marina, the promenade and nearby viewpoints. From land you get a strong sense of the cliffs’ scale, but from the sea their height and continuity become clearer. Many companies offer boat trips, coastal outings and responsible whale and dolphin watching in the area; check prices and timetables directly with operators at the marina. You can also visit the beach and the surrounding panoramic spots, leaving some flexibility for the changing light towards sunset.

Los Gigantes is on the west coast of Tenerife, within the municipality of Santiago del Teide. You can reach it by road from the southern resort areas, from Adeje and Guía de Isora, or by descending from Santiago del Teide if you are coming from inland. The visit works well by car, although in high season it is sensible to allow extra time for parking near the marina or promenade areas. If you are not driving, check the available guagua bus connections to the village and plan your transfers in advance.

There is no entrance fee to see the village, promenades and viewpoints of Los Gigantes. What is usually paid for separately are boat excursions, whale and dolphin watching trips and other nautical activities. Prices and schedules should not be guessed: they depend on the operator, season, type of vessel and sea conditions. If you want to go out on the water, confirm availability directly with the marina operators and check on the day whether the trip is running, especially in wind or swell.

For a first visit, allow time to see Los Gigantes from land and, if the sea is suitable, from a boat. The cliffs feel very different depending on your viewpoint. Afternoon light often brings out the relief of the volcanic wall, although it can also draw more visitors. If you are touring western Tenerife, combine Los Gigantes with Masca, Santiago del Teide or a detour towards the Teno massif. Bring sun protection, water and a light layer if you are heading out to sea.
